Buying a simulator was one of the best investments I’ve ever made. On track, I felt confident pushing to 8/10ths but not confident pushing the car at 10/10ths. I was aware of my lack of car control at the limit.
I needed a way to push the car hard but if and when I made a mistake - it wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. A simulator seemed like a feasible solution, but would it translate?
On track, it is easy to get tunnel vision. Things happen so fast that it becomes to easy to not move your head and look ahead. I had this same struggle on the sim. Crazy right? The sim has helped my racing line, vision, track awareness, as well as spatial awareness.
The first night on the sim I crashed 491x. Pathetic, right? As frustrating as it was, it was also freeing. I did not have car control at the limit. The first time I did ten clean laps in a race, with no incidents, was an absolute game changer for my confidence.
The sim has helped my hand speed as well as my mental processing speed when a slide is occurring. With dedicated practice, I am now able to save the car in situations that were guaranteed crashes in the beginning.
The practicality of a sim as a training tool is a no brainer. Sim training offers a low risk solution to enhance performance driving at the limit. All the major components, aside from fear, can be trained and enhanced on the sim.
The sim needs to be practiced early and often in the beginning phases. Growth occurs fast, but it is frustrating for the ego.
For this reason, I recommend 20 sessions at 2 hours per session 1x a week. Beyond this, fatigue occurs rapidly and mistakes multiply, not from a lack of skill, but a lack of focus.
The second option is 1 hour a day 2x a week.
The cost is the same for either option, it is really about what works for your schedule.
20 sessions @ 2 hours / 40 hours / $2,000
40 sessions @ 1 hour / 40 hours / $2,000
